Bounce rate
Bounce rate is the share of sessions that viewed exactly one page. A high bounce rate on a landing page that should lead somewhere, such as pricing or signup, points at a mismatch between the ad or link and the page it lands on.
Formula
bounce rate = sessions with 1 pageview / all sessions × 100Count sessions that recorded exactly one pageview, divide by all sessions in the period, and multiply by 100. A session ends after 30 minutes without activity.
Worked example
| Sessions on the pricing page as entry | 400 |
|---|---|
| Of those, one pageview only | 180 |
- 180 / 400 × 100 = 45%
Bounce rate for sessions entering on pricing is 45%.
How ProductLense shows it
ProductLense shows bounce rate on the Overview, per channel on the Sources page, and per entry page on the Pages page. A session is 30 minutes of inactivity, and a session counts as bounced when it has exactly one pageview, whether or not custom events fired.
Only the script tag. Single-page apps are tracked through history API route changes, so a visitor who moves between routes is not counted as a bounce.
Bounce rate: questions
- What is bounce rate?
- Bounce rate is the share of sessions that viewed exactly one page. A high bounce rate on a landing page that should lead somewhere, such as pricing or signup, points at a mismatch between the ad or link and the page it lands on.
- How do you calculate bounce rate?
- Count sessions that recorded exactly one pageview, divide by all sessions in the period, and multiply by 100. A session ends after 30 minutes without activity. For example, 180 single-page sessions out of 400 is a bounce rate of 45%.
- Where does ProductLense show bounce rate?
- ProductLense shows bounce rate on the Overview, per channel on the Sources page, and per entry page on the Pages page. A session is 30 minutes of inactivity, and a session counts as bounced when it has exactly one pageview, whether or not custom events fired.
- What does ProductLense need to calculate bounce rate?
- Only the script tag. Single-page apps are tracked through history API route changes, so a visitor who moves between routes is not counted as a bounce.
- How is bounce rate different from conversion rate?
- Bounce rate measures sessions that left after one page; conversion rate measures visitors who became customers. A low bounce rate with a low conversion rate means people browse but do not buy, so look at pricing and signup rather than the landing page.
