Goals and funnels

Define goals from event names or page paths, then chain 2 to 8 of them into a funnel that shows where visitors drop off.

A goal is an action you want visitors to complete, defined in the dashboard rather than in code. A funnel is an ordered list of steps that shows how many visitors reach each one. Both live under Goals & funnels in a site's sidebar.

Goals are on every plan, including Free. Funnels are on Starter and above. Owners and admins create and edit them; members can view them.

Goals

Each goal has a name and one of two kinds:

KindMatchExample
EventThe exact name of a custom eventSignup
PathA page path starting with /; a trailing * matches every path with that prefix/thank-you*

A goal's conversions are the visitors who completed it at least once in the selected range. Event goals match the name you send with window.productlense('event', name), so send the event first: see Custom events.

Count signups as a goal
window.productlense('event', 'Signup', { plan: 'starter' });

Without a *, a path goal matches only that exact path: /pricing does not match /pricing/teams.

Break a goal down by its properties

Click a goal on the Overview's Goals card to open it. For an event goal, ProductLense lists the property keys sent with the event (plan, seats, …) and, for the key you pick, its top 50 values with visitors, the share who became paying customers and their revenue. Everything else is folded into Other. Property breakdowns read raw events, so they cover the last 90 days. Path goals carry no properties.

Name, colour, order and hide

Owners and admins can rename a goal, give it a colour from the chart palette, add a short description, or hide it from the Overview and insights. The tracked event name or path never changes, so history is kept. Hidden goals are still tracked and still usable as filters and funnel steps.

The order on the Goals & funnels page is the order the Overview uses. Move goals up or down there. With no custom order, goals are ranked by conversions.

Filter by a goal

Use a goal as a filter to see the rest of the dashboard for converting visitors only: which channels, pages and countries they came from. See Date ranges, comparisons and filters.

Funnels

A funnel has a name and 2 to 8 steps. Each step is an event or a path, matched the same way as goals, with an optional label. ProductLense counts, for every visitor, the furthest step reached in order within the selected range; a visitor who skips step 2 does not count at step 3.

For each step the funnel shows:

  • Visitors who reached it.
  • Drop-off from the previous step.
  • Conversion from the first step.
  • Revenue: the net revenue of the paying customers among those visitors.

Hover a step for a summary, or click it for the step detail: its top sources and countries, and the median time visitors took to reach the next step. Sources, countries and times come from raw events, so they show for ranges inside the last 90 days.

Your #1 KPI

Pick the one number you grow in Settings → General → #1 KPI: revenue (the default), profit, or any goal.

  • A goal becomes the first tile of the Overview's key metrics, with its conversions, its share of visitors and the change from the previous period. Each breakdown card gains a KPI sort that orders channels, sources, pages, countries and devices by that goal's conversions. Entry and exit pages have no KPI column, because they describe sessions rather than the visitors who converted.
  • Profit moves the Profit tile to the front.

Owners and admins choose the KPI. Everyone on the team sees the same one. If the goal is deleted, the KPI goes back to revenue.
